The initial passion for designing and creating structures that first drew you to architecture school could be in danger of burning out under the weight of the many responsibilities that architects take on in their jobs. Since that passion is what will sustain you throughout your career, it’s important to renew it periodically:
- Identify the Benefits – Ask yourself such questions as “How does my work improve the lives of others?” and “What is unique about what I do?” The answers to those questions will help you identify the benefits of your career.
- Remind Yourself – Pick the benefits of your career that excite you most and develop them into one sentence that captures the essence of why you love being an architect. Repeat this sentence to yourself whenever daily stresses start to get to you and you need to remind yourself of why you chose this career.
- Show Your Passion – Demonstrate your passion for your work by injecting vigor and eagerness into your voice, posture, and eye contact whenever talking to clients or co-workers. This will generate good will and enthusiasm in them as well, which will make your work easier.
- Have a Support System – Every once in a while, trade war stories with your colleagues or discuss your day with someone outside your profession. Other people can often bring new perspectives to the challenges you face.
